Maria is the main character in the story and she is a protagonist. She is the center of the story. Without her, there is no story. In the beginning of the story she seems very purposeful. In this quote we can see when she makes the promise to her mother. Her mother believes she is different and therefore has the opportunity to get an education. She does not want her daughter to end up like the others with no education. Every choice Maria makes henceforward is based on that promise she made to her mother. The promise is some how keeping her on track with her future and at the same time helping her avoid problems

She mentions the myth about La Llorana, because she does not want to end up like her. Fall in love with someone who is a sharp dresser, getting her pregnant, and then disappears and never look back at her. That reminded Maria that life is a struggle. She decided to take care of her self because Frankie’s life was headed toward a “dead end”. Based on the choice she made, her future will be a promising one while Frankie’s future might be unsuccessful.
