Margot's Crimes: A Narrative Fiction

The crimes that Margot and Chris committed would land them in the electric chair without hesitation from the judge or jury. The spree had lasted over several weeks and the police had their names for suspects. They both knew it and they hunkered into a cheap motel room, smelling of stale smoke and a musty dampness that crinkles your nose. The light was dim. She sat at the round table that was slanted from one of the wooden legs being shorter than the others. Circular stains littered the surface from careless coffee drinkers; she traced one with her finger as Chris paced, attempting to change Margot’s mind. He walked to the curtain and peered out suspecting the cops would burst in any second; his back was to her.

You want the fuckin’ neighbor twat to her ya? Then we both be goin’ to the cops.” He stared right into her eyes, putting his hand on her throat. “Oh, no. Not just there though. We going to be cooked, girl! So, shut yo damn mouth. You ain’t turnin’ us in.” He let go of her neck and went back to the window. She knew they had to come clean. Perhaps she had enjoyed the killings, mainly the rush of adrenaline, but she knew that Chris would not stop. Regret filled her bones and slowly she reached for her phone that lay on the table. She dialed 911 while leaving the phone where it was to avoid Chris becoming suspicious of her. Turning it to speaker phone, volume down, she clicked the screen to black and waited.
“Chris Green.” She spoke clearly. She wanted to alert the 911 operator without being obvious.
“Yeah?” His head turned slightly, though not a full turn to view her. His eyes remained fixed on the window.
“Nothing. I just like your name. Margot Davidson is my name, and it doesn’t have a nice ring to it like yours does. Chris Green.” She repeated both of their names several times.
“Shut up woman. You’re drivin’ me crazy.” He walked over to the bed and lay down, kicking his shoes off, signalling that his watch duty was over.
“I can do some watching for you. Get some sleep.” She stood up with the cell phone, and walked to the window. Chris was asleep before she reached the window. She quietly unlocked the door and went outside, the call still on.
