To be written about in history is an honor reserved for a chosen few. Marcus Garvey is one of those lucky few. Most people can only dream of it. The dedication and work it takes to be embroidered in history is very strenuous. Marcus Garvey deserves a spot in history because of his efforts to gain rights for african americans and his momentous contributions to the civil rights movement. Motivation
Marcus Garvey’s motivation comes from his early life and his beliefs while growing up.
For example, as seen for his early teachings, “Garvey became convinced that black people suffered a sort of universal cultural and economic exploitation wherever they lived outside of
Africa. He worked to resolve this by preaching cultural unification of blacks worldwide, stressing the idea of going back to Africa” (Baughman, Bondi, Layman, McConnell, & Tompkins, eds., 1998). …show more content…
Garvey saw and experienced all of the mistreatment of blacks in the world. As an African American himself he thought this was unjust and not deserving of. In addition, USA Today states that, “MARCUS MOSIAH GARVEY'S campaign to promote the virtues of self-pride, self-motivation, self-sufficiency, and other progressive attributes to his brethren of African descent and the fiercely independent segregationist legacy he promoted are still being felt by a largely integrationist U.S.”("Marcus Garvey," 2013). Even though it is not obvious this is one of his greatest motivations. To be remembered for what he said and for people to take it to heart and truly change. Marcus Garvey’s motivation is what helped him to begin his goals to make the world a safer place.

Preparation
Marcus Garvey preparation came in the form of his job as a journalist and his studying to be a politician. For instance, Garvey’s early life and education is revealed in Stanley Nelson’s movie when it is stated that, “Whirlwind traces his childhood, adolescence, and his early training as a printer. It was in Jamaica that he, with his first wife, Amy Ashwood, founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in 1914”("Speech at Liberty Hall, November 25, 1922," 2003). With his early career in journalism Garvey could use his skills to help him in his later endeavours. Because of his journalism career he was able to write more powerful and influential speeches. As well as his education in journalism he also studied to be a politician; “In 1907, participation in a failed printer's strike influenced Garvey to enter politics...Traveling to London that same year, he met with black laborers, intellectuals, and businessmen whose descriptions of the injustices suffered under European colonial rule contributed to his gradual path toward racial militancy”(Jacques, 2001). His interest in the workings of black nationalism persuaded him to study law. This allowed him to be more informed and be even greater at advocating for his cause. Marcus Garvey’s preparation was essential into his influence that he would have as a civil rights activist. Accomplishments Marcus Garvey’s accomplishments contributed to the increasing popularity and support of the civil rights movement around the world. For example, one of Garvey's biggest accomplishments is of his organization, “The Universal Negro Improvement Association stands for the Bigger Brotherhood; the Universal Negro Improvement Association stands for human MARCUS GARVEY 4 rights, not only for Negroes, but for all races.
