Our band director always emphasized the “servitude” leadership. But at first, I could not imagine what a servant leader would be since I always thought that an ideal leader is cunning and charismatic. Over the course of time, however, I learned that leadership is not only defined as a charismatic commander, but also a mediator of the members who guides the group towards a common goal. As the trombone section leader in our marching band, I put in my best effort to demonstrate“leadership”, to never complain at all circumstances, and to encourage the section to keep pursue progress; yet, there was a problem. One day, one of my peers claimed that the freshmen were struggling because they found it difficult to adjust to the high school level of

Moreover, The Marching Chiefs provide much more to the community than just music and a half-time performance. The college atmosphere often extends off campus and into the surround community. It is obvious that Tallahassee is home to the Seminoles; whether it is shown through the display of Florida State signs, bumper stickers, or even local business names, people living or visiting Tallahassee know that Florida State University is here. This sense of pride also creates a sense of togetherness within the community. The Marching Chiefs play a crucial role by producing a common sound that represents the university.…

Rubbing Off in the 110 I’ve always been involved with marching band most of my time in school starting in 5th grade. I fell in love with it. I consider marching band an art form. The band marches in many different designs or a patterns on the field while playing music, and for the Marching 110, they perform a dance at the end. For the rubbings project, I wanted to celebrate my time here at Ohio University and give thanks to The Most Exciting Band In The Land.…

This year, our Marching Band got the chance to go to Nashville, Tennessee where we encountered the different musical culture they had. We attended The Grand Ole Opry, a concert where many talented country musicians performed live in a giant hall. It was a fascinating experience when we learned about the musician’s lives through their music and what they consider everyday aspect of their lives that we don’t have farther up north. One of the band members got the opportunity to participate in a dance off onstage during one of the breaks, something the whole band celebrated in camaraderie. A museum with all things country music, “Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum” held all kinds of pieces from various dresses and instruments of musicians from…

Partaking in the student council organization has allowed for personal and leadership growth, and is comprised of plentiful downfalls and successes. But I believe that it requires missteps and prosperity to learn and grow as a leader. In terms of strength, my skills in proper and adequate delegation tasks have contributed to the successes of my class. However, delegating and simply telling others what to do is not leadership, it is the act of collaborating with one another to execute an event or achieve the goal. Ultimately, I believe that it is my ability to uplift and empower others as my greatest asset.…

Ever since I joined band in 4th grade, people have been talking about how excited they were to join marching band. At band day in 5th and 6th grade, everyone else shared how they couldn't wait until they were a 9th grader and could finally be able to perform and play in the stands like we saw the marching band do many times. In 7th and 8th grade, we had a watered down version of marching band that only played two parades. While I was glad to get snare drum both years, the exhilaration was never there, and I came very close to not joining marching band. But against my will, I ended up auditioning for drumline in April and I got the cymbals.…

From middle school to high school, band became a vital part of my life. It was all I knew, it was where I felt comfortable, and this was where I pratically began learning about my leadership skills. However, my curiousity grew when I was introduced to Class Council. I thought that there was no difference, and I naively thought that since I have been a part of a leadership role for about 4 years, everyone knows me, so I thought Class Council could not be so hard. I was terribly wrong.…

From the start of my four year commitment to football and marching band I saw leadership all around me. My first summer of football my freshman year the seniors were prime examples of leadership. They were right there to correct form on our lifts, blocks, and set the overall example of what it meant to be a Mead football player. Later that summer I threw in marching band camp to my agenda. The drum major, my sister, lead the band with kept the entire band in order, and worked with us until our sets were flawless.…

A section leader has to be a good teacher to instruct the rookies and if really needed then returning marchers. Humbleness is an important quality of a leader because being a section leader does not mean you are the best and you are higher than others; all it means is that Mr. Oubre gave it to you. Compassion because this are just kids, and this is just marching band, also you want to build friendships not dominance. One would need confidence because a section leader should set the example for the section and play loud and proud. Section leaders need respect from their peers because nobody listens to somebody they do not respect, especially if that person is a high schooler.…

Failing at something you’re passionate about can be devastating. This happened to me my senior year of high school. I had just moved back to my hometown that summer, and after one year at a school where I knew no one and another year homeschooled, I was ready to get back to a familiar place. I was looking forward to one high school activity in particular: marching band. I had practiced some throughout the summer, assuming that a year off from band wouldn’t make an outstanding difference in my performance.…

When I was in high school I can’t say that I had the knowledge of all the leadership terms I know today, but what I did understand back then as a captain was that actions could speak louder than words (especially with high school girls who don’t like being told what to do). This goes back to leading by example, I knew that my teammates watched how I handled situations, so I made sure my behavior modeled what I expected out of them. Something as simple as showing up early to practice or helping underclassman carry equipment were behaviors I displayed so that I didn’t have to tell others what to do, because my actions had already shown them. The group process activity consisted of me leading a group therapy session for classmates. I had the group complete a painting of a picture of a being in nature that survives in a harsh environment: a flower in a sidewalk; a fish at the bottom of the ocean; a creature in the desert.…
