March On Washington
The march on Washington is said to be one of the biggest rallies. It is said to be the biggest rally because the march had about 250,000 people in it(Getchell). Americans marched after they heard the “I have a dream” speech by Martin Luther King. Before the march actually happened many leaders of the march did not want to do it. They feared the violent protest with Malcolm X. The leaders of the march felt that the peaceful march would turn violent. The march on Washington was one of the biggest marches of its time. All the people gathered at National Mall in Washington, DC(Getchell).
The specific leader of the March is not really one person. The March actually had several leaders. The main leader people knew the most was Martin Luther King Jr. There were many groups who went to the speech that Martin Luther King Jr made. He was the last to speak at the speech(Getchell). The march first actually leader was proposed in 1941 by a person called A. Philip Randolph(Garraty). Mr. Randolph was the president of Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Before the march actually happened the leaders discuss what they would do. At first the march was organized by the “Big Six”(Hansan). The march was to protest the Civil rights document due to the blacks not benefitting as well as other groups. African Americans students would do sit-ins at lunch. The groups would be replaced if one group was arrested(Hansan). African Americans wanted the march to be peaceful and to show a very powerful message. African Americans wanted fair shopping and also fair jobs. They were discriminated against due to their color of their skin. At first many leaders did not even respond to Mr. Randolph
