ainting Nude Descending a Staircase (No. 2) by Marcel Duchamp is more thought-provoking and artistically relevant than Dorothea Tanning’s painting Birthday. These pieces were painted in different time periods, when different styles of art were common, but when the viewer considers the aesthetic qualities of the piece, the historical value and the ease of which one can draw an interpretation of the piece Duchamp’s is more thought-provoking. Though both pictures have compelling titles that contrast with the contents of the actual painting, Duchamp’s contrast more directly challenges what the viewer is thinking and is easier to draw an interpretation from. “Nude Descending Staircase (No. 2)” is a misleading title, but the viewer could interpret…

The men were not aloud to do so, so they painted from what they thought the anotomy of a woman looked like. People of the community are most likely to think that is pornographic, inappropriate, and should be displayed on campus. Also because it gives off a negative vibe, that she doesn’t have any self respect or values. It also shows that her relationship isn’t based on real love because she is displaying that she seduced him with her beauty and musical charms. The literal meaning made the painting seem more pornographic then the actual painting itself. I honestly believe that if people didn’t know the meaning and were just looking at the painting they wouldn’t have classified it as being a pornographic…

At that time nude women portrayed in art were traditionally historical or biblical in nature; they were not presented as a part of reality. Manet’s crossing of that line caused shock and outrage when his work was revealed to the public at the Salon of Paris. Fortunately, for the normal people in the world, there are no controversies that provoke unreasonable people.…

The painting was first exhibited at the Salon des Refuses (Salon of the Refused) in 1863. Manet’s work created an uproar because the primary aspect that caused a stir was the subject matter. During those times art that contained a nude woman in a classical setting was considered a goddess, models, or mythical. Normally a nude model in a painting would not be facing the viewer’s way as well. Manet’s Luncheon on the Grass was not accepted because the nude female was in a contemporary setting.…

Olympia could be considered as the work that produced the most shock in the European art world. Presenting a modern contrast to Cabanel’s typical Salon work The Birth of Venus, Olympia portrays an idealized nude figure, engaging directly with the viewer to create a sense of confrontation. By using techniques from Renaissance art and a title that references classical mythology, Manet’s rebellion against the Salon was clear. Other than the ‘shock of total female nakedness’ Olympia (a common name for prostitutes – a detail which would not have been lost on gallery goers) was a confronting figure (Rosenblum and Janson, 291). She is outlined in black and her skin is slightly yellowed, a factor that led to her being described as a ‘gorilla’ when exhibited at the salon.…
