The fragmented figure and stark linear structural framework highlights Duchamp's interest in machinery and its connection to the body's movement through space. His work reflects his attraction to avant-garde notions of the artist respect with one of his early heroes, symbolist painter and graphic artist, Odilon Redon. He challenged audiences through his representations of traditional subjects in a surprising manner as he developed his interest for symbolist subject matter. His deep interest in themes of the exploration of sexuality identity inspired his reimagining of woman as elusive femme fatale. His innovative practice and subversive philosophies lead Duchamp toward Dadaism and Surrealism.
Once Duchamp became immersed in contemporary movements such as Dadaism and Surrealism , He continued mold these concepts into his own. His art making process was a mixture of trial and error . An example of this is Angel of the north (1998) , which focuses on hope at a miserable point of change in the north-east of Gateshead,England .The Angel has a significant symbolic milestone in english history, which marks the end of coal mining in Britain. The concept of the Angel of the North is set to resist the post industrial world’s dismissal of past and becoming aware of the workers who had spent the past century mining coal beneath the surface. Gormley wanted to work with time and the purpose of it, he did this through choosing a site - specific location and tactically placing it on the A1 Motorway . The effect of this placement would hopefully appeal to the audience as they drive past it.The sculpture has been given its location as it rests in a valley which is around a mile and a half wide .To make the artwork become a prominent figure, Gormley has used a combination of materials involving the use of 200 tonnes of corten steel and 500 tonnes of concrete foundation .The process undertaken for the angel of the north not only challenged traditions, but challenged Gormley as an artist . Whilst constructing this major project one of his difficulties he experienced was when he was transferring the rib structure , which protruded from the central axis of the body form, and connecting that separate part of the str to the wings.
