He did not care if it was capitalism or communism that made China run, as long as it ran smoothly and gave him more power over the people. Deng had a program called the Four Modernizations which were agriculture, industry, science with technology, and defence. Through this program he ended communes and allowed private enterprise, which meant that any extra produce that was grown, the farmer got to keep and do with it as he pleases. People could also set up businesses and there was more freedom in factories which made them run smoother. Deng welcomed foreign technology and capital which caused coastal cities an economic boom. As time went on, students and workers wanted to create a democracy movement, they met in Tiananmen Square and hung banners and when they would not leave, the army took action. Tanks and troops came in and opened fire, thousands were killed while others were imprisoned and tortured in what is known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre. The last time the world had seen something as horrific as this was the massacre at Amritsar in India on April 13th, 1919. This showed the people that the communist government was determined to keep control. China was and still is struggling with a massive population growth. China’s population was at around 1.3 billion, which is the largest in the world so Deng came up with and enforced the one child policy. This stated that urban families can have one child and rural families can have 2 children. This caused a slow in the population growth but China is still overpopulated and the numbers keep rising. With the population growing crime rates increased along with it.
