Many People Experience Traumatic Events In Life

Decent Essays
In life many people experience traumatic events. Now a days these traumatic events are effecting many people’s lives. Traumatic events may be rape, a physical assault, death in the family and many more. Some people handle them differently. For adults it may be them quitting their jobs, turning to drugs and alcohol or even committing suicide. For kids it may be the same except they would drop out of school. A couple of months ago I came across a quote that said “I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to become”. To me this quote means that the event that took place in your life does not define you. You choose your own future or path you want to follow.

Recovering from trauma may seem impossible to the victims who are left to cope with the intense symptoms that plague them long after the traumatic incident. Although progression is slow, recovery with the right therapy is possible (Wright, 2011). Some victims may choose a therapist who is well equipped to provide therapy to those who have been through trauma. Other victims might choose a spiritual leader to help them through the process of recovery and others may not choose to get help at all. Not only are the chances of recovery low for those victims who choose to untreated, they are also at risk for further difficulties that can disrupt their lives and the lives of their families such as anxiety, depression, pain, and substance abuse (Schiraldi, 2009).…

It’s very strange how one experience or choice you make in your life can change the rest of your life that follows that event, would you then in turn change these decisions you made. Such as your what if your mom conceived you not on the knowing basis. What if everyone was telling her not to because she was to be a single mom and that’s not a world a child should be born into, but then what if she challenged this belief that she grew up with. This then in turn affected all her choices later in life, but then vice versa what if she didn't challenge this belief and stuck with what she knew. This may be of the more extreme choices in life that some people must make but we all have that certain time in our life that comes where we must break away and make…

Every survivor was impacted in a way unimaginable and in a way that most may never understand. In the popular teen-fiction novel, Twilight, Stephanie Meyer writes “Just because we’ve been… dealt a certain hand… doesn’t mean that we can’t choose to rise above- to conquer the boundaries of a destiny that none of us wanted”. Just because one has a bad life or their life takes a wrong turn, does not mean one shouldn’t try to change. This quote fits today because a lot of people have been rising above the odds or fighting for what they want or deserve. People should fight to make their way in life to get what they and other people deserve, no matter the situation. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, fought for other people's rights.…

We all live with the power of choice. Often times I will find myself playing out in my head the consequences of this action or that, however absurd, and it brings me back to this idea. Throughout most of our lives we allow circumstances to get the better of our dreams, for some it is much more difficult than others to break out of what they are living and do what they truly want; however it is trying that gives our lives purpose and meaning. If each person were to accept fully whatever life was set out for them without deviation there would be no rebellion or concept of freedom, there would be no hope. According to the excerpt from the novel The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert, it is an individual’s responsibility to take control of their own fate and mould their lives into something worth living.…

Sartre is well known for his work in developing existential thought. The question being addressed in this paper is one that asks what Sartre meant by a “monstrous freedom.” In other words, in terms of existentialism, what did this idea of freedom have to do with the way in which human behavior is explained? In order to understand Sartre’s idea of existentialism, then this question of monstrous freedom must be addressed. One author wrote, “there is an infinite gap between the past and the present.…

In order to understand the impact of a traumatic memory from the past on the present we must first understand what memory is. The act of remembering is something we begin to do subconsciously, it is an innate evolutionary feature adapted for survival. Memory is the mental faculty of retaining and recalling past experiences and we use it in our daily lives without realising. Fundamentally, memory represents a change in who we are. Our habits, our ideologies, our hopes and fears are all influenced by what we remember of our past.…
