Manipulatives in the classroom
There are different ways in which we as humans learn. There are three different learning styles, auditory, visual, and tactile learning. All of these styles involve process within the brain. Most students use all three in combination to full understand new concepts in the classroom. It is the instructors job to make sure all students fully understand and can compute all concepts required of them by the state. However, in most cases, public schools lack even enough funding for basic necessities in the classroom and as such the idea of having additional teaching tools is almost a dream. Manipulatives can almost be anything, however their purpose is to be used as a teaching

From the Egyptians to the Mayans, they all had some form of math and counting tools as well. This has been in development for hundreds of years and still continues to evolve as technology evolves. The use of computers and iPads in this new digital age has spurned and new wave of new manipulatives to be used in the classroom. These new virtual manipulatives can be used in all sorts of ways. At one local elementary school (pine shadows elementary) all of the classrooms have a cabinet with laptops and iPads for students to access a website called dreambox. The teacher will introduce a new concept and will use traditional physical manipulatives to teach this new lesson to the student for the first time. However, the virtual manipulatives are used to help build, understand and review old concepts in a way that this new technology driven generation can understand. According to powerupwhatworks.org (n.d) virtual manipulatives "can be especially helpful for students with disabilities because they can improve their understanding of the abstract symbolic language of mathematics". Virtual manipulatives also not only help out students with disabilities but benefit all students as a whole. All websites for learning are different in the case of dreambox it is supposed to adept to the individual need of the child as no two children are the same. During this time some schools have a period of one on one with students whom are struggling more than their peers. In the case of pine shadows elementary the time was called intervention and the students would leave their home classroom and sit with a teacher for individual and small group activities. During this time the teacher may take more time with the students and has use of additional manipulatives or tools at their disposal to help these struggling students understand these new concepts while the average and gifted students have some form of help and can learn at their own

The procedure is usually mechanical, involving rote behavior and very little decision or choice (167).” The students are told what to do and are expected to do nothing above that. Profound thought is out of bounds in these classrooms. The procedure that is taught during a section in class is practiced the same way over and over again until a test is conducted. If, after the test, students still have trouble comprehending the lesson they are simply told to practice more.…

The first virtual math manipulative I would like to discuss is the virtual base ten blocks. Base ten blocks are a very versatile manipulative and can be used with many math concepts. The biggest advantage the virtual base ten blocks have over the physical base ten blocks is that the virtual ones require no storage space in the classroom. The second advantages is those with less dexterity can manipulate the virtual base ten blocks easier than the physical base ten blocks. However, a major drawback or disadvantage of the virtual base ten blocks is if the technology isn’t working you can’t access the manipulative.…

Imagine right at this moment you had to take a math test about what you learned in middle school, how well do you think you would do? What is so upsetting, is that many of you, probably do not feel that confident in your ability to pass that test or at least struggle completing it. For some of you, we will give you some slacks as it's been a few years or maybe even decades since middle school, but what is the point of having that education if you are not going to retain the information. It's shocking to say, that a large portion of current middle schoolers in the united states struggle to meet the standard proficiency level expected of them, because “According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress more than sixty percent of the…

I believe that manipulatives are beneficial to student learning. Young children have a really hard time thinking abstractly, manipulatives give them a visual way to solve problems that their minds are not capable of solving without them. As an adult, who is not very good at math, manipulatives really help me as well. It is hard for many people, whether they be young children or adults to solve a math problem with just a piece of paper. Using manipulatives is also more engaging.…

Their selection and effective use needs careful consideration and meticulous planning (Drews, 2007). Judgment regarding the appropriateness of a resource should be based on the extent of how the mental images produced by children are likely to be helpful/unhelpful in scaffolding their thinking (Bottle, 2005). Drews (2007) also noted that whilst structured manipulatives, such as, Dienes and Cuisenaire are especially helpful for children struggling with decomposition and number property and relationships, unstructured manipulatives such as Multilink, counting materials or collections of shapes are more versatile and encourage children’s own application. The ability to use manipulatives in diverse ways encourages greater opportunities for investigational and collaborative work, and subsequently leads to more purposeful mathematical dialogue and the development of logic and reason (Hansen,…

The teacher also uses form shape manipulatives, colored tiles, red-yellow counters, rulers (inches and centimeters), online resources (dreambox), SMART projector, and document camera. In the lesson I observed on March 20, the teacher was reviewing interpreting bar graphs with her class. The students used different colored pencils so that they could represent each bar in different colors. The teacher displayed a copy of the worksheet under her document camera so that all the students could see what she was talking about when she pointed to a part of the document. For their warm up earlier that day, students reviewed comparison of measurements and were given the chance to use rulers to draw each line.…

It has been studied and proven that no two brains are alike. With this being said, no two students learn the same. One student may intake information more efficiently with visual aids while another may work better with hands on projects. Even though learning may happen differently from student to student, there is something that all students share; the five senses. Dr. A. Jean Ayres, who is known for her work on sensory integration, “maintained that the basic operating premise of the theory of sensory integration is that effective learning occurs when the senses are stimulated with incoming information” (Ragonese 3).…
