A concept called, managed care, has impacted the views of the people by meaning it would be combining insurance with health care providers and facilities in a unified network of cost control in the 1990s. (Moody) Unfortunately shortly after as stated, “Pessimists believe that controlling costs by eliminating unnecessary care, as managed care tries to do, provides only temporary relief because we have already gotten most of the cost savings from managed care. In the long run, population aging and technological innovation may make rationing unavoidable” (Moody) As the years go by, science and health continue to make advances in different discovers of treatments universally. Meanwhile, it is clear that healthcare for the elders do not go to high technology care, it goes towards long term care like prescription drugs, nursing home care, and at home health services. (Moody) With these methods of care, an elder would be able to be content as they continue to age and would not have to suffer through the risk of a major surgery. High technology continues to have a long term effect in the rise of health care spending and Daniel Cahallan believes that is also a waste of time for the elders to be undergoing high technology procedures. Daniel Callahan is a philosopher who believes, “There is a time to be born and a time to die”, meaning there is a ‘natural’ human life cycle that people should accept. (Moody) As mentioned in the article, “Callahan is concerned that prolonging the lives of these patients is wasteful if the same resources could be used to improve the quality of life of other old people or people of other age.” (Moody) I do agree with this statement because for example why would a person do an organ transplant to a 75-year-old when someone who was 65 years old would benefit from the procedure more.
