I believe there was a purpose behind the setting of the play. The apartment appears to be a really tight living space in which the whole family does not have much personal space. It adds to the tension throughout the play as they are forced to live basically on top of each other. As for the connection to the theme, we later learn the Ruth had to consider an abortion because she feared the apartment would be too small for her baby. This contributed to theme of the play because Mama did not like that her daughter in law would consider aborting the baby. The theme of achieving dreams was used in the setting of the play.
