Mama Romma Essay

When looking at similarities between Gomorra and the film Mama Romma by Pasolini, it seems important to look at the parallels between characters, especially young men and their involvement with crime. This parallel is exceptionally present when considering Ettore from Mama Romma and then Marco and Ciro from Gamorra. To begin with, both of these films end with the same kind of tragedy: the death of these young men. Therefore, it seems that both of these films intend to leave audiences with the similar messages that the worlds these young men have become involved with are dangerous and very punishable. Therefore, their ambition to be mafia bosses and their fantasies of the lifestyle possibly reflects the role the mafia plays around Naples and Italy in general, in which for many young men the ideal and most plausible profession is to be in the mafia, given its reach and influence in the area. It is a similar situation in Mama Romma, clearly Etorre could be a “good boy” and go to school, get a paying job, and help his mother at the fruit stand, but the access to nice things and quick money is apparent in theft with the entourage of boys Etorre meets. Therefore in both these cases, all of the boys put themselves on the road towards their eventual death in order to put themselves ahead and out of the poverty prominent in their given areas. There is an argument that in both of these cases, the boys got greedy and shortsighted in their ambitions: Etorre robbing the hospital without much of a plan and getting caught, Marco and Ciro getting tricked into a job for a great deal of money only to be shot dead by the boss they were trying to
