The novel Like Water for Chocolate written by Laura Esquivel is a love story like no other I have read. As soon as I started reading this novel the main characters Tita and her mother, Mama Elena jumped out at me because they share similarities and differences to my Mother Engracia and my grandmother Ignacia who also went by Nacha for short. Engracia like the protagonist in the novel, Tita suffered emotional and verbal abuse from her mother. However, Engracia was different from Tita because she never ran away from her problems, but instead decided to face them even when she was suffering from her mother’s abuse. Nacha and Mama Elena are both not only strict, but cold and emotionless towards their daughters.…

Equality is something that is perpetually strived for, but seldom achieved. In the novella The House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the protagonist, Esperanza, does not want to continue the cycle of inequality. Throughout the story, Esperanza continually sees women in her life treated like objects in a society that values women for their looks, and not for what is on the inside. In the thread of gender roles, a theme that is developed is that men do not treat women as their equals, but instead as something that can be possessed and dominated. This theme is developed throughout the stories Esperanza tells about her great-grandmother’s resentment of being a married woman, Rafaela’s lack of freedom in her marriage, and the troubles Minerva…

Esquivel argues that family traditions are meant to be broken. Alex, John’s son, sees Esperanza and immediately states that he wants to marry this little girl. He was struck by Esperanzas beauty. Even at such a young age, and with little to no understanding of family tradition, Alex proclaimed he wanted to marry Esperanza. Esquivel writes, “They all laughed at that, but when Rosaura explained to Alex that he couldn’t because this little girl was destined to take care of her until the day she died, Tita felt her hair stand on end.…
