Being put in an abnormal situation not many people have experienced will cause people to tease one another. Small actions and statements that are uncontrollable will become something huge. This idea is implied by Golding when he states: “Ralph shrieked with laughter. He jumped up. “Piggy! Piggy!” (11). These words spoken by Ralph in Lord of the Flies emphasize how something as simple as a name is being picked apart and causing someone to feel bad about themselves, which is a lot like bullying. Also, when Golding describes Ralph and how he “shrieked with laughter” Golding is suggesting a scene is happening, it’s not just brought up and then over with. People become brutal and malicious to those who don’t deserve it, comments like “You’re always scared. Yah-Fatty!” (45) are made even though it is unnecessary. Rude comments made by people can destroy a person’s self confidence, but the person who said it won’t feel guilty because the only worry they have is themselves. In Lord of the Flies, Golding adds “Piggy once more was the center of social derision so that everyone felt cheerful and normal” (149). The use of the word “derision” emphasizes on the point of people putting others down to make themselves feel better. Whether it be an opinion that initiates a fight or an action, it’s something that comes along with life and can only be prevented for so long. Times will occur throughout life when someone snaps and it’s like they go to a whole new place where violence gets involved. Thomas Hobbes explains “The first maketh men invade for gain; the second for safety; and the third, for reputation” (1). Reputation is a part of human nature that many people find self-assertive and will influence future arguments. Conflict will always arise when there is no common power involved. Also, once one is caught in the moment and wrapped up in all the evils anything can happen. Losing control takes place in Lord of the Flies when the boys are doing a dance in the storm, the words written are “Simon’s dead body moved out toward the open sea” (154). The words “dead body” clarify how deep and controlling being caught in the moment can be since a group young boys killed an innocent boy. Finally, conflict and war is occurs when everything gets put behind and there is only one focus.
