Male Pattern Baldness Research Paper

Improved Essays
Up to 70% of men will face male pattern hair loss in their life. Therefore, if you are worried about losing your hair or dealing with hair loss right now, know that you are definitely not alone. But, I realize that knowing that other men are sharing the same problem won't do a lot for your confidence if you put a lot of value in your hair, so let's talk about why male pattern baldness occurs and whether you can do something to prevent or reverse it.

What Is Male Pattern Baldness?

Also known as androgenetic alopecia, it is a common form of hair loss that usually follows a pattern, where it starts above the temples and then thins and recedes in the shape of the letter M. This receding eventually results in either partial or total baldness.

For instance, hormones have an impact on whether or not you will get this condition, especially a male sex hormone that is a product of testosterone, called dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

DHT is synthesized in the testes, adrenal glands, prostate, and hair follicles. Hair follicles are very sensitive to DHT and can shrink, which results in a shorter lifespan of hair as well as an abnormal production of hair.

Moreover, if your dad, uncle, or grandfather has it, on either side of the family, you are more likely to develop it. While researchers are not sure why, genetics seems to be a big risk factor.

Is There Anything You Can Do To Prevent It?

How much DHT someone produces is quite dependent on their genetic makeup. There are some drugs that prevent the conversion of testosterone to DHT, however these can come with a lot of unwanted side effects, such as low libido.

You may think that by lowering your testosterone, you can also lower the DHT conversion; however, studies have shown that testosterone levels in both balding and non-balding men are very similar. In fact, aging males usually have less testosterone in their body, so reducing the hormone doesn't make much

Because so little else is known about the cause of male pattern baldness, it is important to tackle as many areas as you can to prevent it. Do not just assume that you are doomed to get it because your father has it. Instead, do as much for your hair health as you can possibly do.

For instance, if you see thinning hair, that may be a sign that something else is going on in the body. Hormonal issues or nutritional deficiencies are common reasons for hair loss, and by addressing these issues quickly, you can promote a healthier head of hair.

Also, eat a good diet, exercise, and keep your body working at an optimal level. The healthier you are, the healthier your hair will be.

For the general drug Minoxidil topical, Rogaine is the best brand. Even though the exact manner in which Rogaine works remains not known, it is considered to work by dilating the blood vessels in the scalp in order to facilitate the improvement of hair follicle function, while also stimulating growth of hair. This product is therefore designed for the treatment of male pattern baldness in men who begin to gradually experience the thinning of hair at the top of their heads. Rogaine should not be used on damaged, sunburned or irritated skin on the head. It may allow for the absorption of more medication into the body which can be dangerous.…

The most common cause of hair loss in men is due to androgenic alopecia, the early stages of which can be slowed or reversed with medication; while more advanced cases may be amenable to hair transplantation. Androgenic hair loss is due to the activity of androgens, predominantly DHT, at the dermal papillae of the individual follicles. In adult men, its incidence is roughly equivalent to chronologic age, and it has a strong genetic component. The physiology is primarily androgenic, with dihydrotestosterone (DHT) the major contributor.…
