The Taliban is a faction of Islamic extremists who use their superior firepower and botched beliefs to take over sections of the Middle East. The Taliban take the Koran, their version of the Catholic Bible, very literally. As awful as this is, the Taliban is an extremely successful and overpowering group. According to BBC News, during that time, "They (the Taliban) were in control of over 90% of Afghanistan, and now, they hold more area than they have ever before" During the mid 1990s, the Taliban took control of the Pakistan and Afghanistan governments. They were removed from power in 2001 after the United States carried out a set of missile and drone attacks. The influence of the Taliban cannot be escaped today. I Am Malala, the book I read for the blog post, details the horrors of living in the Swat Valley, an area in Pakistan where the Taliban held hostage. The Taliban did everything from civil rights violations, torture, public killings and many other horrific offenses to any person's dignity. Fazlullah was the premiere Taliban radio host. He congratulated girls who stopped their education, and he condemned girls, like Malala, who continued their education, calling them “buffalo” and “sheep”. Each day that Fazlullah preached his ideals, new “edicts” or acts came out that negatively effected the once beautiful Swat Valley. Women were not allowed to shop at the market over the Eid holidays, men were not allowed to shave or cut their hair and girls were shamed if they continued their education.

Each person has the right to a quality life. Within these rights is the right to a quality. Education is the most powerful tool that a person can use to change the world. The fight to rid the Middle East of the Taliban is a daunting task, but many nations are coming together to fight for the rights of the children.
