Make a Wish of Massachusett by Melissa Wlostoski Make a Wish foundation is a place where they grant wishes to children with life-threating conditions. It was inspired into being by a 7 year old boy name Chris, who had leukemia and in 1980 he wanted to be a police officer. A friend of the family who was a US customs officer wanted to help with this but ran into problems. He then talked to a spokesman for the Arizona department of public safety, he then talked to his director and he was given the okay to do the kid's wish from him. Which included things like giving “Chris and his parents a helicopter ride to the headquarter”, a bunch of gifts which include his own uniform, “a old badge of one of the officers”,” a smoky the bear hat” and him being “first and only honorary officer” of the place. A group of people which include two actual DPS officers' names Jim Eaves and Frank Shankwitz got involved. One brought a patrol car and the other brought his motorcycle. Officer Shankwitz talked about creating an organization which granted wishes. More people got involved and donations were made,then tax exempt paperwork was filled out and then with that, all taken care of along with 2000 dollars in donations, a first official wish was granted. A kid name Frank "Bopsy" Salazar had three wishes, which was “to be a fireman, go to Disneyland and a ride in a hot air balloon and the kid got all three granted. “ The foundation now has chapters all over America. There is a couple of offices in Massachusett: one is Boston and one is Springfield,MA. According to Nicole a young woman who works in the communication department of the Boston MA's Make a Wish office.“Its global.” She has been with the organization for 3 years. “Our mission is to provide hope and joy to children.” They “relies on individuals' donations and communites” in filling these wishes of these
