Reflective Essay: Nonverbal Routing

Improved Essays
Makaya is a 14 year 0 months old young lady; today is her birthday. She is currently enrolled in the 8th grade in Wise County Public Schools. Previous history obtained from her father and self-reporting indicated a past struggle with academics per evidenced on her report cards, D’s and F’s. Her father reported she is currently making A’s and B’s. I asked him what changed? He replied, “She lived with her grandmother until I remarried. When I remarried my wife started working with her and making her go to school.” Makaya self-reported she used, to miss a lot of school because her grandmother did not make her go to school or do her homework. She said that changed last year when she moved in with her dad. She shared, this year she was taking …show more content…
She was focused and direct. The most memorable answer was to eyelash: “Ohhh… the hairs above your eye…I am pretty sure they are hairs.” It was priceless to see her face when I said “eyelash.” On “credible” she commented we just learned this. She gave examples, but did not know a concrete definition. This section is a little harder for me to grade. The subjectivity of the answers causes me to pause and question my score.
Based upon her non-verbal routing score she needed to begin on the Nonverbal Level number 4. I added the Routing scores incorrectly at first and started her on level 3, but realized quickly these were too easy for her. I rechecked my score and stopped administration on the Quantitative Reasoning section. We went to Level 4. She was so sweet when I told her I started in the incorrect place. She said for me not to worry and “just to calm

She was chatty during the Knowledge section. On the Quantitative Reasoning section, she subvocalized her reasoning on the last item she said, “I don’t know, but I will say c.” She had reached the ceiling rule for Visual-Spatial Processing and moved on to Working Memory. Again she did well until the last few digits.
On level 6 only two subtests were left. Knowledge and Quantitative Reasoning. She answered direct and moved right along. She said they are getting harder. I encouraged her with you are working hard.
The Verbal section went quicker. She worked through level 4 without much commentary. On the Quantitative Reasoning section, she requested for a repeat and subvocalized to herself. She moved on to Level 6. This level was challenging for her. She struggled with the analogies and subvocalized on a couple occasions stating “this one is hard.” On item number 3 she subvocalized her reasoning, egg is to bird as birth is to child you know like a baby.” On the next parts she said several times, “I don’t know.”
Overall, Makaya worked hard and appeared to be focused. The overall testing experience for me was stressful. I felt more confident as the testing session progressed, but I feel slow around the fluid reasoning and vocabulary sections because of the subjectivity. I think the more I study the test the more confident I will

Stewart Riddle argues that: “there is little evidence to suggest that testing teaching students on their literacy and numeracy will have any impact on the quality of teaching and learning in Australian classrooms” (The Conversation, Dec 1, 2015). Is Riddle right? Include at least one argument for literacy and numeracy testing and one argument against literacy and numeracy testing in your answer before evaluating the strongest argument. Australian Education policy has undertaken a recent change to mandate testing for teaching students prior to their graduation.
