Major Public Health Disparities

Decent Essays
A major public health issue is minority health disparities. This is a significant issue due to how negative health outcomes lead to the low statistics of minorities concerning education, economic status, and productivity. Moreover, as a minority myself, I have personal ties to the negative outcomes of this particular public health issue. I frequently view how avoidable diseases and unhealthy life habits continue to evolve in my family and the entire African-American community.
Minority health disparities are caused by specific core components. These components include racism, accessibility to care providers, the lack of diversity within care providers, and economic barriers. Additionally, there is an unequal amount of minority health research

Health disparities are a prevalent issue in healthcare professions and educational institutions involved. These disparities focus on the inequalities among different populations in terms of their health outcome, in which certain populations face better or worse conditions based on their race, class, or level of education. Thus, health disparities imply that certain groups of individuals receive finer conditions or treatments in terms of access to healthcare as opposed to those that receive much less. This implies that diversity, which can range from race or socioeconomic status, is challenged, in which a select population of individuals are categorized to be treated with higher respect or little respect. By accepting this as an issue, universities…

Identify an Area of Health Disparity, and Find a Bill/Policy Affecting that Disparity Health disparities can be defined as inequalities that exist when members of certain population groups do not benefit from the same health status as other groups. Disparity area that I like to focus on is the racial and ethnic minorities who experience for poor quality care due to cultural difference, language barriers, effects of disability, and providers’ cultural competency. Race and ethnicity are also a determinant of infant mortality rates among African American women. Not only are there different risks among racial groups, but also there are racial inequalities. African American women are subject to more discrimination by health care workers and it ultimately changes their experience in healthcare. Changes in African American women experience in healthcare leads them to mistrust health care workers, and not feel comfortable with receiving care. Public health officials have been trying to understand how to change these inequalities and negative outcomes.…

Kelly, I agree, that there is room for improvement when it comes to tackling health disparities and there are programs emerging that are trying to bridge the gap. According to the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (2015) in efforts to tackle health disparities, the National Institute of Health (NIH) selected two research teams to conduct studies on how to improve health outcomes, related to hypertension, for populations most at risk for health disparities. These studies are different than ones previously done because they fully engage patients and clinicians in the design and conduct of the studies. Each study has a patient-centered approach so that the patients are able to be involved in determining ways to improve their health…

The United States has a health problem: Nearly 70% of American adults are overweight or obese and half of all adults in the US have one or more chronic health conditions. The US invests more of our GDP on healthcare than any other country and is disproportionately ranked 37th by the World Health Organization compared to other national health care systems. How can we solve our problem and improve health in the US? Family practice and primary care physicians are the key to reversing these trends in health rather than specialists; only in primary care do physicians hold the responsibility of preventing disease and promoting health over the lifetime of patients. My interest in primary care is motivated by a passion for preventative medical education,…

The burden of death and illness associated with chronic diseases experienced by Africans Americans and other people of color are a result of disparities in the United States. The health disparities associated with these diseases are a compelling reason for addressing this problem. For example, According to CDC, diabetes is approximately 70 percent higher in African American and nearly doubles in Hispanic than whites (CDC, 2011). My goal is to improve the lives of racial/ethnic populations that are suffering from these devastating diseases by the end of 2017. Though health has improved in the U.S., the gap has widened between whites and blacks. Researching the disparities has been attempted but the growing immigrant population of blacks in the U.S. causes complexity in the research. The dependent variables of health that were measured were self-related health, activity limitation, and limitations due to hypertension.…

Healthcare is more than just the care that you receive in a hospital. Poverty, lack of employment, and lack of housing all fall into that category. And all racial bias can and does take part in these implements of health. It seems people are hesitant to claim that there is healthcare discrimination. Despite major advances in medicine and public health during the past few decades, disparities in health and health care persist. Health disparities are prevalent in the United States and are significant among underrepresented racial and ethnic groups (Mitchell, 2015). Compared to white Americans, these groups are uninsured or underinsured, have decreased access to care, and receive poor quality of care (Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality [AHRQ], 2013). Nurses can aid in reducing health care disparities through health systems interventions, cultural competency, and patient, provider relationship interventions.…
