At the ceremony of twelve Jonas was chosen to be the receiver of memory ,which is to receive the memories of all the past life. Yet as he started his training he realized how empty the life in his society is without pleasure and pain. The memories made Jonas's life more meaningful, so he started to wish to give the memories to the people of his community. The main protagonist Jonas obtain the ability to see the memories of the past ,but it seen in the novel as something natural and not out of the ordinary "This time, as he lay basking in the wonderful warmth, he felt the passage of time. His real self was aware that it was only a minute or two; but his other, memory- receiving self felt hours pass in the sun. His skin began to sting" (Lowry 76). He also could see beyond ,as the world he live in eliminated all kind of bad and good emotions to stop war , hunger and hatred. However, getting rid of emotions made them lose love, joy and the ability to see the beautiful colors. Being able to see beyond allowed him to be the only one to see the colors ''As he looked up and toward her going through the door, it happened; she changed. Actually, Jonas thought, trying to recreate it in his mind, it wasn't Fiona in her entirety. It seemed to be just her hair."
