Mad Cow BSE
Mad Cow disease is otherwise known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Bovine means that the disease affects mainly cows and cattle. Spongiform refers to the spongy look of an infected cows brain, prion causes holes and tissues to fold. Encephalopathy is any form of disease to the brain. BSE is found in more in younger cattle and cows. Other forms of BSE are found in humans, cats (feline spongiform encephalopathy), sheeps and goats (scrapies), and deer and elk (chronic wasting disease). No cats in the US have been found to posses the disease however. Animals aren't sure the only ones who can be infected by BSE.
The version of BSE in humans is called Creutzfeldt-Jakob …show more content…
ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) it can detect the presence of the already folded tissues caused by prions. This test however is inconclusive and can not be fully relied upon. Western blot analysis (protein immunobolt) can determine not only if Prions are active but their size as well through electrophoresis separation. The western blot is also used to determine the different types of strains from Prions.
BSE comes in many forms from animals to humans. We cannot cure the disease once it has already begun but we can prevent it from happening. In being more careful and considerate when slaughtering a cow and what we do with all the parts we can prevent an …show more content…
