Macromolecules are vital to humans. They are divided into different types with different functions. Humans use carbohydrates as a main source of energy. Carbs are divided into simple, monosaccharide or disaccharide, and complex, oligosaccharide or polysaccharide. Simple carbs are easily digested and provide big amount of energy for a short period of time, while the complex carbs distribute the energy in a longer period of time. What’s more, complex carbs contain fibers which cannot be digested. This helps controlling the blood glucose levels by slowing the rate of absorbing sugar. Lipids are another type of macromolecules. They also are a source of energy and divide into steroids, phospholipids and fatty acids. The unsaturated fats increase …show more content…
There is another type of fats – trans fats. They are extremely unhealthy because they lower HDL levels and increase LDL levels which can lead a human to a higher chance of heart disease. Proteins are another type of Macromolecules. They are built by amino acids which are held by peptide bonds and are divided into 4 different structures – Primary, Secondary, Tertiary and Quaternary. They have many functions in our body (e.g. repairing/building muscle tissues, antibodies, etc.) and one of these functions is to serve as catalysts. These catalysts are called enzymes. They speed up chemical reactions in our body without being used up. Many people live their lives without even suspecting what keeps them alive. Now, when I know more about macromolecules, I can be more efficient during the day and feel good in its end. For example, I need energy in school for a long period of time. What’s more, I play tennis and now I know what I should eat before, during and after practice. I also know what to eat so as to keep my cholesterol on good levels and therefore lower the chance of a heart disease. In addition to that, I can apply this information so as to help my
