The temples are in upper section. The construction designs were specially adapted for mountain region. There are approximately 200 buildings throughout the parallel terraces around an central square. The eastern and western sections were divided by usage. The eastern side was used for residence and the west side for religious ceremonies. In the terrace of the ceremonial rock there is a three sided building, which was used as guard house.
One of the major landmark is the Intihuana stone. Intihuana in inca language means to tie up the sun. So Intihuana stone actually means ‘the post of the sun’. It is one of the many ritual stones of Machu Picchu. Incas believed that the sun was tied to the Intihuana. The stone is situated in such a way that at 11th November midday the sun is directly atop it.
The Inti Mach’ay cave is another major landmark. It was used for the Royal Feast Of The Sun. the cave walls and windows are finely polished. The windows in this cave allow sunlight to enter only during some days of December. Which was the time of the feast. Rest of the year the cave remained unused.
