There are various people who feel strongly about the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which censor movies based on their content. The MPAA rating system prevents many problems from occurring by appropriately rating and censoring all films that are shown in movie theaters everywhere. DVDs are also rated and censored. Some may argue that the MPAA rating system is a harassment to freedom/expression and should not have to be a requirement for all films shown in theaters. However, movie censorship prevents the minds of children from becoming corrupt. Also, vulgarity and obscenity is restrained which might offend numerous people. In addition, movie censorship protects the morals of society. Therefore, The MPAA rating system prevents children’s minds from becoming corrupt, restrains vulgarity and obscenity that would offend many, and protects the morals of society.

Unfortunately, children watch movies as entertainment just as adults would, which could potentially expose them to this mature content. Hence, it is necessary for the MPAA to rate movies which include five different ratings (G, PG, PG-13, R, NR-17). Children that watch violent or sexual films tend to be affected by the content in which they are watching. In fact, “In the largest international review of more than 1000 studies...researchers concluded that there is a positive association between violent entertainment and aggressive behaviour” (Browne 2005). In other words, when children watch violence in movies they tend to reenact this violence especially if it is the “good guy” in the movie that is violent.
