The carcinogens in cigarette smoke convert to forms that react with DNA, that cause many genetic changes known to exist in human lung cancer. The constant contact of these carcinogens leads to many changes in the genes regulating growth.
The symptoms of lung cancer can be one or more of the following: shortness of breath, weight loss, chest pain, coughing up blood, persistent cough or a hoarse voice.
If a doctor suspects lung cancer, he or she may order a sputum test or a chest X-ray. They also may order a biopsy of the lung tissues. If cancer is found, the doctor has to identify the type of lung cell that is affected. Different types of cells respond differently to treatments. Doctors may also check to see if the cancer spread to other parts of the body. Different type of treatment could be used, if this was true.
