The Austrian-British philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once said, “The limits of my language are the limits of my world.” Language can unlock many doors, but our world can also be limited to what we know about it. This is the cruel reality that many of us face when arriving in a new country, not being able to speak the language. One feels as everything around us has broadened, but our world has shrunken. One feels impotent, unable to communicate with the people that surround us. For this reason, it is of most importance that we can find people that can understand how language acquisition works in order to ease our transition to this new way of speaking. According to Krashen, The monitor helps a person polish their writing because it focuses on rules and correctness. It acts as an editor. This as well is important to know because sometimes ELLS tend to over-use it due to heavy concerns about mistakes. While, some are under users. According to the article given in class, Stephen Krashen’s Theory of second Language Acquisition a psychological profile can determine if a person is an under-user or over-user. These two concepts differentiate the difference between Conversational and Academic language. (BICS) or Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills focuses on the social and natural communication of the leaner in the new language. This mostly takes place outside the classroom such in places like the lunchroom, during sports activities, recess and social events.
