The three main goddesses presented in The Iliad are Athena, Aphrodite, and Hera. During the Trojan War, Athena and Hera fight with the Achaeans, while Aphrodite favors the Trojans.…

Over the course of history, in most societies, men have had a more dominant role. Men normally ran the business side of the family and women looked after children and helped the husband when asked. This is the same in William Shakespeare’s Othello, set in Venice and Cyprus in the 16th century. Othello has the gender roles of an Elizabethan society where men were the dominant figure over women. Women were passed from father to husband and served the man who was in charge of them their whole life.…

Corinna describes how women feel when they are married, she states, “And when it 's said that women must be subject to men, the phrase should be understood in the same sense as when we say that we are subject to natural disasters, diseases, and all the other accidents of this life: it 's not a case of being subject in the sense of obeying, but rather of suffering an imposition” (Moderata 59). Corinna Salvadori Lonergan wrote a book review on The Worth of Women in which she states, “ The environment in which Fonte’s women lived comes alive, with marriage as the institution which incarcerated them” (Lonergan). Valeria Finucci wrote a book report on The Worth of Women. She reports that Moderata wrote about the powerlessness and lack of authority that women experienced in the 1600. The seven Venetian ladies discussed the advantages and disadvantages of marriage, as well as the worth of women.…
Greek Conceptions of Gender Gender inequality has been the major topic of discussion for many cultures right the way through history. Throughout Greek mythology, women are portrayed pessimistic and troublesome symbols, while men are known for being strong and controlling. Talking about Greek Goddesses we always think of a typical woman who is correlated with women’s roles, for example being a loyal wife, kind and caring towards her children and husband and be the idea women.…
In Homer’s world, women, specifically the Greek goddesses, are as much caring and nurturing as they are battle-hardened. When necessary, the women in The Iliad are able to use their natural charm or cunning in order to further their agenda. Hera, being a prime example of this, consistently shows her ability to feign a docile nature in order to distract from her crafty plans. However, there is a drastic distinction between the mortal and immortal women of The Iliad. Although most women in The Iliad play a vital role in the plot, the immortal women play a direct role while mortal women affect the plot indirectly.…

As the saying goes, “women: you can’t live with them; you can’t live without them.” In The Aeneid, composed by Virgil, the protagonist Aeneas comes into contact with a multitude of women who either facilitate or inhibit his mission of founding a new home for the Trojans to settle. Creusa is Aeneas’ first wife who is responsible for telling him about his destiny and offering him peace in times of loss; Dido is the Carthaginian Queen who is filled with love for Aeneas by Venus in an attempt to find aid for Aeneas’ long journey; and Lavinia is the Latin Princess who has been fated to be the wife of Aeneas and is the cause of the Latin-Trojan conflict. STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM’S FEMALE CHARACTERS In William Shakespeare 's play ‘A Midsummer Night 's Dream, ' women in the society are depicted to possess some limitations that limit their being while others are depicted to possess strengths that make them achieve in life. The world around which women live is full of limiting factors, factors that hinder the full expression of women’s interests. Examples of these situations are when Hermia’s father wanted to marry her to a person she did not love and when Titania gets to disagree with Oberon concerning the young Indian prince. However, women are strong enough to fight through the challenges and succeed.…
Though it must be not mistaken while figures such as Dido are venerated, the suicide of exemplary women is legitimised only in relation to the context of a male definition of Roman female heroism and that female suicide is only respected if it supports patriarchal orders and values. Virgil describes Dido as having virtus a characteristic usually reserved for men, women normally having pudicitia. Dido is further described by her as ‘dux femina facti’, ‘a woman was the leader of the deed’ by Virgil. Ascribing the word ‘dux’ with Dido is to connect Dido’s position with that of Roman military leader, and therefore all the common ideological attributes that go with such a position. This use of ‘dux’ is to make a clear demarcation between Dido’s natural role as a woman and her ‘masculine’ role a position of public service.…
