Lucozade took this approach, and in a 2013 advert claimed their product Lucozade Sport, “gives you the electrolytes and carbohydrates you need, hydrating you, fuelling you better than water." (Cohen, 2014) Plus at first development Gatorade made claims that their product could prevent and cure dehydration, heat stroke, and muscle cramps, and improve performance (Cohen, 2012) these claims may not have much scientific support (hence leading to the banning of Lucozade’s advert making that claim.) lead to a boom in sales for these isotonic drinks, and being the sort after solution to dehydration, due to their claims, its no surprise that they now serve a firm place in marathon running. The use of the drinks has lead to them being linked to the exercise associated disease Hyponatraemia that leads to athletes becoming critically ill due to a drop in their serum sodium (Cohen, 2012). The cause of this is keenly debated—in particular whether it is the volume or type of fluid consumption that is most to blame. Numerous studies have been carried out on this claim and conclusions suggest that there is no evidence that “consumption of sports drinks (electrolyte-containing hypotonic fluids) can prevent the development of exercise associated hyponatremia.” (Hew-Butler …show more content…
