This mixture also creates several interesting storylines for the series.
In the pilot multiple storylines are spread out over five acts and a teaser. The teaser (twelve scenes) introduces us to our main cast. When the first scene rolls we are introduced to Lucious Lyon (played by Terrance Howard) a drug dealer turned rapper turned music mogul and the patriarch of the Lyon family. Lucious is the CEO and founder of the world famous Empire Entertainment record company. Early into the teaser we learn that Luscious plans to choose and groom an heir to one day take over the company. It’s hinted that this sudden announcement is related to Lucious’ health as we briefly see him undergoing several medical exams at the start of the episode (1:02).
