What if teenagers could drink? How would that affect the world we live in today? One of the prime debates going on currently is the argument regarding the minimum age for legally consuming alcohol. Not only is this a large discussion of the past and present, but also will continue to be one of the largest debates of our future. Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, there was not even an age requirement. According to A&E Networks in their prohibition article, they state:

In the 1970s, due to lowering the age for alcohol consumption, there was a vast increase in car fatalities involving younger people and drinking (SpeakUP). In response to this drunk driving epidemic, President Ronald Reagan passed the Minimum Drinking Age Act (MDAA), which increased the drinking age to twenty-one (Boston). This does not seem quite right. One cannot expect every eighteen year old to enter the bar and not have one sip of alcohol; it just does not work that way. Bars are in a strange position when it comes to minors. Most bars require you to be eighteen to get in, but twenty one to drink; yet twenty-one year olds can still buy eighteen year olds drinks (illegally) and get away with it. Why not just allow eighteen year olds to drink if they are allowed to be surrounded by alcohol? Or why not make all bars twenty one if you do not want there to be underage drinking? College is one of the main sources for this matter. In college, everyone hangs out with everyone and age does not matter, unless you are trying to get alcohol. Which most college students who are not of age have a friend who is of age, so it’s
