Journal Entry 3: Lower Manhattan
Our third adventure in the course was in Lower Manhattan also known as the Civic Center. Coming from Queens I usually take the N train coming from Astoria to the city so I was running a bit late. I was never great with directions or the subway in general but I impressed myself when I was able to take the train downtown and meet up the rest of the class. I met up with my class in the Civic Center where City Hall stood. I rarely go to lower side of the city mostly because I always found it to be a bit duller compared to the rest of Manhattan. In this neighborhood one will find mostly government offices and some historical sites. I remember the day the 9/11 attacked occurred. Even though I was only 7 years old I was aware of my surroundings. I remember being picked up from school early and even seeing my teacher cry. I remember hearing my mom trying to contact my father and brother that day. Born and raised in New York was always a blessing, but that hit hard to every New Yorker. Walking all throughout Manhattan you are constantly hearing noises from peoples conversations to busy roads. However, as we got closer to the memorial New York seemed quieter. The World Trade center was a commercial complex what was finish being built around the lat 80s. The centerpiece of this complex was the twin tower. These two buildings were the tallest buildings in the city for over 30 years. In the year 2001 the city had faced its worst catastrophe in all of its history. An Islamic extremist group al Qaeda had hijacked four planes and crashed two of them into the towers. Both the towers later collapsed and nearly 3,000 people were killed on that
