When they got back to their town their town sheriff asked Richard why a black woman was living with him. He replied that she was his wife. They immediately were arrested for breaking the Racial Integrity Act of 1924. They went to court and they then were plead guilty and were to serve one year in jail. However the judge sentenced them to leave the state for 25 years. “Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay, and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix.” The landmark case was was officially argued on April 10 1967. It wasn’t till June 12 1967 that the case ruled in their favor.
Loving vs. Virginia was quite the impact on history. Their case inspired people to come out and let people know that they were married. This then created the interracial marriage club. To this day there are interracial couples and marriages.
Through history we have had problems with people receiving their rights. It is our government Responsibility to make sure we receive them, but it is also our responsibility to know our rights.
