Love poems in ‘The tales of Ise’ and ‘The Tale of Genj’ are examples of literary excellence and art. They have been explained by various analyses and by well known analysts (as listed in references). The poem subtly expresses the choice of the fan to go along with the moonflower (yuhugaho) recently picked by Genji, and the scent she imbues it with. The “grace and distinction” of the poem was indicative of its sender’s character. It created ripples in the mind of Genji.
Again, another form of nature is used to express love and relationship. Expressions are extremely symbolic, tenderly expressed and softness is the jewel of the crown. The complexity of the poem also expresses the level of evolving love poems in the 11th century. A desire is expressed, which revealed everything without any revelation to the person who has ability to understand.
