Edna has proven to be a terrible mother who does not properly love or take of her children. After having a fight at dinner with her husband Leonce, “Edna looked straight before her with a self-absorbed expression upon her face. She felt no interest in anything about her” (70). Edna shows no guilt in the way she acted and continues on without giving what Leonce had said a second thought. Later, when planning her extremely expensive and lavish dinner party, Edna says, “I'll let Leonce pay the bills” (113). Without even asking Leonce first, Edna selfishly volunteers his money to pay for her own event. In the final scene of the book “[Edna] looked into the distance, and the old terror flamed up for an instant, then sank again” (153). By deciding to end her own life, Edna is further demonstrating how selfish she is and how ignorant she is towards how her actions affect
