October, 2015 Love and Attachment Many of us have heard the old saying that a woman marries a man that reminds her of her father and a man marries a woman that reminds him of his mother. Attachment styles that are created when people are children carry over as a model for the attachments that are made in an adult’s relationships. John Bowlby theorized that attachments that were made in childhood were lasting, psychological in nature, and the connectedness between the individuals would last a lifetime, these attachment styles have a tendency to follow people into their adult relationships. These types of attachment allow for emotional detachment, even though the individual may feel as though they are independent. Lastly is fearful avoidant attachment, with this style of attachment the individual is in a constant state of ambivalence. They fear being too close to others, but also fear being too distant as well. Research has shown that there is a connection between the style of attachment and the type of love that exists within the relationship. A study in 2008 found that partner specific attachment anxiety was associated with proximity seeking behaviors as well was a precursor to passionate love (Eastwick & Finkle, 2008). A study conducted in 1990 also concluded with results that provided considerable evidence for an attachment theory based perspective on adult romantic love (Feeney & Noller, 1990). Secure attachment was linked to a higher relationship satisfaction and quality along with a higher self-esteem (Feeney & Noller, 1990). Secure attachment can ultimately lead to consummate love, having passion, intimacy, and commitment within the relationship. This is possible for the securely attached individual because they do not fear their partner leaving them and they are not wholly dependent upon their partners either.
