We have enslaved, murdered, exploited, humiliated, terrorized and tortured millions (if not billions) of our own species. The slave trade and the Holocaust alone killed an estimated 22 million people. Such atrocities are done all over the world even today; oppression and refusal of human rights in anti-feminist countries, neglect and abuse in poor families, stealing and lying in every nation. The author William Golding saw these attributes and shared his views through his novel Lord of the Flies, which shows the evil man will do outside of social constructs. In the past, propaganda was a powerful and effective means of spreading information, true or not, especially during WWII. The Nazi party was especially notorious for spreading lies about the Jews, telling all that they were the reason for their poor economy and shaky government. Aggressively spreading lies to the people was the main reason that 6 million Jews were killed during the Holocaust because it convinced the public that the Jews were evil. These racial assumptions and discriminations were caused by the public’s lack of understanding, and ended up causing devastating atrocities. Lying about a person’s or a group’s character devastates their reputation and could ruin their lives. A current example of lying spread through media is former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s crack cocaine scandal. When questioned about his cocaine use, he first denied all allegations, saying that the idea was preposterous. Eventually he admitted to smoking cocaine while in a drunken stupor, ruining his political career. Lying in today’s society is expected to some degree, and is known to advance you in the world, whether it be socially, politically, or professionally.
