There are numerous things that residents in nursing and long-term care facilities need, whether those residents are long term or short term. First and foremost, what all residents need and deserve is respect. Nursing facility residents need to be included more in the decision making with their care, whether that be involving their treatment and medication protocols or other items. Another item that some may see as a want rather than a need is human interaction; this could be in the form of volunteer visitors or the STNA’s actually having time to talk. One of the first ways, and in my opinion the most important, is for the employees that a resident is going to come into contact with and that are involved in their care practice empathy. By this I mean anyone that is involved with someone’s care should put themselves in that person’s place and act accordingly. Also when it comes to residents that may not be able to respond whether they are in a vegetative state or they are choosing not to talk, anyone interacting with them needs to remember that just because they may not respond does not mean they are not listening.
