Mike had always wondered when, and more specifically how he would die. Maybe, he thought, that one day the shadow monster would simply decide that it wanted another go, and would come back for him instead, or that Max's crazy older brother would accidentally run him over with his fancy expensive car. He hoped it would be a memorable death, like the kind everyone's talking about for a while, and whenever they mention your name, they whisper it.

Mike never expected it to be whatever the hell he felt when he watched Will Byers eat a Lollipop right in front of him.

He really wanted to throw himself off a cliff. But he couldn't do that if his body wasn't really following commands. Like at all. The only thing he could do was stare. And yeah,

Will knit his eyebrows.
“Really?” Will checked his own paper, squinting unsurely at his results. He leaned over to get a view of Mike’s work when suddenly his face hardened.

“Mike you're not even on question three.”

“Oh.” Mike swallowed thickly, beginning to wonder when his throat started feeling so tight.

Will served him a concerned expression, pulling the red lollipop out of his mouth with a faint pop.“Why is your face all red?”

Mike was silent for a minute, quietly hoping his brain would come up with a believable excuse. “It's hot in here.”

The smell of cherry drifted through the air and found his nose, the sweet scent causing him to flutter his eyelashes slightly. He caught his breath, leaning back away from Will a bit, trying as hard as he could to keep his eyes level.

“Are you okay? You look like you're getting sick.”

His stomach did a cartwheel when Will raised a hand and brushed Mike's bangs away from his forehead, pressing his fingers, and then the back of his hand to the same spot.
