I was also able to discreetly fix problems when I was given an order that would impair mission requirements. This would not have happened if my peers had not given me the confidence and fidelity to lead them from the front. At the end of the exercise, my peers and higher-ranking individuals saw that they would be able to grant me more responsibilities and trust in doing what is required to do in any situation. I was awarded again, from my Commanding Officer, with a Certificate of …show more content…

I went to work the next day and got reprimanded for taking on a duty that was not of my rank, being too valuable of an asset at work, and not informing anyone in my chain of command of the position I was going to be holding. My Gunnery Sergeant stripped me of my keys and billet and proceeding to take out his frustrations on me because he had to fix the problem I created. The recent and reoccurring actions of Captain O’Donnell, since her assignment to the Personnel Division in January of 2017 have had a detrimental and adverse impact on my ability to effectively supervise the Personnel Division deputies. For point of reference, Captain O’Donnell was assigned to the Personnel Division on the pretext her primary functions were focusing on recruitment opportunities and establishing an internship program. Additionally, she was not going to have any direct reports, thus the deputies assigned to the Personnel Division would remain under the direct supervision of Sgt. Bieberdorf and me. Captain O’Donnell’s first objectionable interaction with the Personnel Division supervisors, Sgt.…

For this reason, when I learned about the “Honor Cadet of the Flight” award at Civil Air Patrol Encampment, I was determined to achieve it. I tried extremely hard and made sure that everything I did displayed nothing less than excellence throughout the week. The Senior Leader Course (SLC) reinforced in me the true meaning General Al Gray’s Grayism, “Don’t be afraid to learn from others” (Otte, 2015). The greatest learning opportunity in SLC came from my fellow classmates and their fearlessness in sharing their personal and professional experiences. If I could transport this class back in time one year and know what I know now, I would have been better able to assist one of my Soldiers whose service was reviewed under the Army’s Qualitative Management Program (QMP). Many of my classmates impressed me with their experience, both their technical skills while deployed and their compassion for Soldiers while fulfilling their duties as senior non-commissioned officers (NCO). I learned the most from…

Unfortunately, toxic leaders rear their ugly head in all branches. Toxic leaders use their rank and position to bully their subordinates into committing fraud and other crimes with promises or threats. One example is a unit on deployment in Iraq had an assigned Field Ordering Officer (FOO) money to assist with development of the country’s infrastructure. The unit’s commander appointed the executive office in charge of the FOO account along with a SFC as the assistant. During the deployment, the commander threatened the executive officer with bad evaluations almost guaranteeing the loss of promotion and the SFC with missions that are more dangerous if they did not sign purchase request that the commander hand carried.…

Challenge of Command Summaries Chapter 1: Chapter 1 of Nye’s book “The Challenge of Command” begins with an explanation that this is an important book for specialists and junior officers to read so that they may thoroughly understand the challenges that are faced by positions of command. That was probably the most valuable lesson I took from the experience: That no matter how much planning and preparation goes into a mission, things can always go wrong and a leader must be prepared to adapt and overcome any obstacles thrown his way. In a situation where new problems arise, the Troop Leading Procedures and the Operations Process can be applied to aid in completing the…
