The Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment (LOTCA)
Reasoning for choice of assessment
The Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment (LOTCA) measures the basic cognitive skills required for everyday function including orientation, visual perceptual and psychomotor abilities, problem-solving skills and thinking operations. The time needed to administer LOTCA is approximately 45 minutes (Canadian Partnership for Stroke Recovery, 2011).
It is important for Ghada and her mother for Ghada to be able to put on makeup independently, and since her condition of mental retardation she appear to be having some problem-solving, thinking and sequencing, memory issues as well as some mild motor (strength) issues. the LOTCA gathers information on those basic cognitive skills by observing the person doing selected task and it can be used with individuals with mental illness, it appeared to be a good assessment to choose and use. The information derived from the LOTCA can assist with the development of an intervention plan.
