In the story marigolds as young Lizabeth matures from childhood she changes, her perspective on life changes. She realizes that she has matured and has become an adult. I found that the theme is that it is important that people change emotionally as they get older and wiser. For example, she explains that she develops compassion after she destroys Miss Lottie's flowers, she feels that once you have lost your innocence you gain compassion when you become and adult. Another form of this change is Miss Lottie she changes emotionally as she get older because she cares for her flowers and all of her love and joy go into the flowers but she no longer cares for the presence of people or the wellness of her home.
