Almost every sector of German society is affected and manufacturing production collapses creating mass unemployment. Germany’s government borrows money to relieve public distress but it fuels runaway inflation, which in turn affects every other sector of the economy, from agriculture to retailing. In the economic chaos, the National Socialist, or the Nazi’s as they are better known, quickly gain political converts as well as votes. In 1932 Hitler stands as a candidate in the Presidential elections, he comes in second but in the Reichstag election of that year, the Nazi party became the largest single party. The resulting Soviet-German non-aggression pact, stuns the world and launches Hitler on his greatest gamble so far, the invasion of Poland. In secret appendixes to the pact, Hitler and Stalin have agreed to a division between themselves, not only of Poland but of the Baltic countries Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland. The Germans had 56 division deployed and disposed in a wide crescent stretching from Slovakia in the south to East Prussia in the north. The Russians meanwhile had six armies stationed along Poland’s eastern border, poised to invade after the German attack. Poland herself has seven regional armies, though these are very weak formations, consisting in total of no more than 23 full divisions. The Polish Armed Forces are also seriously deficient in tanks, artillery and aircraft. On September the 1st, 1939, Hitler invades Poland. Hitler’s intention is to crush Poland before Britain and France can react. This is the first demonstration of Blitzkrieg or Lightning War. On September the 3d, when Britain and France declare war on Germany, the bulk of Poland’s army is already well on its way to being encircled.
