What would you do if you were the only person in your class who was not allowed to wear overalls? You’re the odd ball and the classic bandwagon argument of “everyone else is wearing them!” does not work, and your mother just does not seem like she’s going to change her mind anytime soon. Then your mother comes back with the famous “You’re not everyone else” or “I’m raising you to a higher standard”. You say “why not?” she says, “because I said so” and that’s yet again another argument you have lost. Admit it! We have all been there at least once in our lives. The first reason Mother should have allowed Ralph to wear overalls is that Ralph would learn responsibility and consequences of choices. Ralph was old enough to make his own clothing decision. His apparel was modest and his attitude was uplifting so he deserved the responsibility. If he was old enough to go to school, he was old enough to face consequences of his actions. If wearing overalls were a bad idea, Ralph would soon find out for himself. The second reason Mother should have allowed Ralph to wear overalls is he may not have gotten hurt. Mother gave in and allowed him to wear overalls but later changed her mind and made him wear a suit. If mother had just allowed him to do things for himself, the other children might not have hurt him. He was already not allowed to wear overalls, but then his mother made him go in a suit. Yeah, that’s sure to make him real popular! His classmates hurt him, and his self-esteem was now hurt too. The Third reason Mother should have allowed Ralph to wear overalls is that Ralph would have enjoyed school more. School is always more fun when you’re liked by everyone.
