Summer Reading Literary Analysis Essay Title During the summer I read the book Zorro by Isabel Allende. This is a story about the development of a true hero and his companions. The infamous character Zorro is apparent throughout the novel, beginning in his young childhood all the way up to his adulthood, while along the way he faces obstacles that test his skills both physically and emotionally. The theme of the story is love, but the author twists the meaning of love so that it transforms into being like the devil, tricky and devastating. However love is a fragile subject to deal with but in the end most people fall in love with the person they least expected or not at all. Diego, the main protagonist in the story, falls in love with a young girl, Juliana de Romeu, but as the story unfolds there paths do not seem to intertwine, and Diego is left fights a war he soon realizes he won’t win. This is the first time our protagonist, Diego, meets the lovely Juliana, “He needed only one glance to decide that Juliana, the elder, was the most beautiful women in the world”(Allende 113). …show more content…

When Diego realizes that Moncada and himself are after the same prize his perspective on Juliana shifts as seen by this quote, “. . . Diego was making some calculations and he concluded that time was working in his favor: once Juliana saw that she was withering on the vine, she would marry him to keep from becoming an old maid”(Allende 170), and Juliana is now seen as an object that must be collected in order to beat Moncada. Now in other love stories this would be the part where the main protagonist sweeps the girl off her feet and they fight against magical dragons so the can live happily ever after. However the author takes …show more content…
As the four characters begin to travel to Alta California, Diego unexpectedly is yet again faced with another obstacle, Jean Lafitte, interfering with the chances of him and Juliana becoming lovers. During the voyage Jean Lafitte learns that his wife had died and she has asked Juliana to become the mother of the baby, and the reaction of Diego is this, “Diego threw himself at Juliana’s feet to convince her of the stupidity of what she was about to do”(Allende 316). Diego’s love for Juliana has manifested his soul for so long that it almost seems that he loves those who do not love him back. The author took a path of love that shows love can lure a person in till the point of their ultimate devastation and
