Literacy Prop Box
A prop box is a box full of age-appropriate props that pertain to a specific story. They help the children learn more about the story through play. Props not only help children learn new words, but also express their comprehension of the story in a fun and creative way. Vukelich, Christie, and Enz (2010) wrote that “stories for dramatizing need dialogue and action-characters who say and do something” (p. 95). For this assignment, I created a prop box for a circular book called If you give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Numeroff.
Summary of Book
This book is about a little pig. One day the pig’s friend, a little girl, gives her a pancake with syrup. When the pig realizes how sticky she is from using the syrup, she tells her that she wants to take a bath. During the bath, the pig tells the girl that she wants to play with a rubber duck. The rubber duck reminds her of the farm and her old friends. The pig feels homesick and wants to go visit the farm with the girl. While the pig helps the girl find a suitcase, she finds

I would incorporate more items that the children could touch, smell, and taste. For example, I would incorporate a mini keyboard so that the children could play with it and hear the different notes as they reenact the part where the girl plays the piano so the pig can dance. Also, I would redo the outside of the prop box (which looks like the dinner table in the story) because I realized the construction paper that I used was very easy to tear. I would prefer to redo it and use a more durable material, such as brown felt. In addition, I would buy a larger rubber duck because the original rubber duck was too small and could be a choking hazard. Also, I would eliminate the balloons I placed inside the bubbles box because I realized that they could also be choking
