Recently, there has been a growing interest and push to improve on young children’s literacy skills and comprehension. These skills are vital in order to be successful in school, work and everyday life demand (Sedita, 2011). The third-grade is a critical time in a child’s educational career because a drastic shift in learning takes place. During this time, many basic reading skills are established and learning becomes more complex. According to Workman (2014) “if children do not have proficient reading skills by third grade, their ability to progress through school and meet grade-level expectations diminishes significantly” (Workman, 2014, p.1). Many of these students are at a much higher risk of dropping out of school. This can sometimes …show more content…
These volunteers and tutors along with site directors and site assistants will receive curriculum training at the beginning of the years and periodically throughout the year. It is important to recognize that developing, executing, and implementing a literacy plan of this magnitude will require time and effort to accomplish this task. This process can take up to 2 or 3 years to see substantial progress.
Literacy Planning Model
1. Establish a literacy planning team
2. Assessment Planning: generate screening assessments, guiding instruction, and progress monitoring
3. Literacy instruction in the content area for the classroom
4. Intervention strategies for struggling readers to address phonics, word study, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills
5. Flexible scheduling to accommodate for instructional needs
6. Professional development planning
The first step is to assemble a literacy planning team who is representative of your target stakeholders who will be responsible for implementing the plan. Members should include teachers in all areas or subjects, parents, administrators, reading specialist, interventionists.
Once the planning team is in place, review what is already in place and gather information relating to the six components
