The arts of the western world have been largely dominated by the artistic standards established by the Greeks of the classical period. It is from the Greek word “theatron” meaning “a place for sitting”. It is said that the Greeks were the first people to erect special structures to bring audiences and theatrical performers together. The theatres were normally located near a populated area at the bottom, or cut out of a carefully selected, sloping hillside overlooking a seascape, plain, or city. They would then largely be constructed with three distinct parts: the theatron (viewing place) for spectators, the orchestra where the chorus and actors performed; and a later addition, the skene (scene building), which provided a scenic backing.…
Arcenia Ellis was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. As a child, she always remembered praying for her family and having dreams. She was a dreamer from a child but never could understand the meaning. Through discipleship and mentoring God revealed that these were one of the ways that he communicates. She learned about the word of God by crying out to God.…
Belle Boyd: Paving the Way for Women for Centuries to Come “Perhaps Miss Boyd wasn’t beautiful, or as beautiful, physically, as some other women, yet there was something beautiful about her… something a man never forgot,” (Snow 90). Maria Isabella Boyd, was one of the most prominent spies for the Confederates during the Civil War. Although Miss Boyd was very young when she started her spying career, she was nothing short of a reputable spy. Throughout Boyd’s life, living as a spy, she was arrested a total of about seven times, but was only incarcerated twice. Boyd may not be the most appropriate model for young women today, but she helped her fellow Confederates in what they might have considered the most important ways.…
He explores instances of heroic, complex, and transformative architecture and how other scholars have failed in their analysis. He does a fairly good job defining the terms he uses for each section, but does little to connect the three, making it difficult to decipher a cohesive aim of the…
Ancient Greek theaters were one of the corner stone’s of ancient architecture to modern architecture. The influence that the ancient Greeks had on other cultures architecture is astounding giving their lack of resources and materials. The vast beauty of how the theater evolved is something incredible. We will see how the Greek theater started and how much it actually changed over time. Also we will get a look into one of the famous ancient Greek theaters; Delphi.…
Forms change when ideas change. By the end of the late eighteenth century, there was a huge movement to renovate theater architecture in France. Philosophers, politicians, and playwrights, including Louis XV, noted that France needed to discard the past theater structure and had started to debate about which structure of playhouse could appropriately support the new age of French theater. They debated on the different modified theater forms to find the ultimate stage design and structure for France. In The First Frame, Pannill Camp explains that every artistic framework is affected by the thought of that era, arguing that the theater reformation in late eighteenth-century France had alleviated the disconnect between the theory and practice…
Over the centuries, theatre conventions evolved from the highly presentational performances of the Greeks to the extravagance of Elizabethan productions and eventually conglomerated to produce contemporary theatre. The University Playhouse’s performance of Acting: The First Six Lessons expressed this conglomeration of Greek and Elizabethan conventions through elements of presentational theatre, a non-localized set, and a supporting cast that functioned similar to a chorus or ensemble. This performance also altered conventions through the addition of female actors, use of representational aspects, adaption of the functions of the chorus or ensemble, and lack of a raised stage. In the following sections, I will discuss the adoption and adaptation…
To examine the evolution of stage management, we must first examine how the term came about, and other terms for the stage managers predecessors. Then we can begin to look into how the role has evolved over time into the present craft students are being taught on technical production courses in theatre in different locations around the world. To begin, we must investigate the term of ‘stage management’. As we look back into history, we can see that people who were what we know today as stage managers, did not have that title, however they performed a similar function in the theatre.…
In this rational I will discuss how meaning is made in performance in relation to the site specific space. I will deconstruct some of the underlying themes presented in Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House in order to examine the ways in which they correspond with the chosen performance space. I will demonstrate how the context of the play and my chosen space interconnect with each other and how site specific space can further help me to explore the motives and themes that appear throughout the play and how they are able to generate meaning. A Doll’s House is a late 19th century play by Henrik Ibsen, the play is set around the main protagonist Nora Helmer a wife to Torvald and mother to three children.…
I never intended to study architecture. When I was applying to colleges, I intended to study kinesiology and psychology. Studying dance and photography when I was younger gave me a desire to be expressive, and even though I felt a connection to the physicality of dance through kinesiology, I knew I wanted to do something that fulfilled that same sense of expression. It wasn’t until I studied architecture that I noticed some of its similarities with dance. Dance is expressive of the body, but it is also an observation of people’s interaction with each other and with their surroundings, a study of people’s movement through space.…
