ABSTRACT: Various books and literatures provided information regarding the application of chemistry in an important and interesting area i.e. lubrication. The literature imparted the following information regarding the liquid lubricants:
Lubricants are the substances that that are added to reduce friction between two surfaces.
Friction is simply defined as an opposing force that comes into play when one body actually moves or even tries to move over the surface of another body. It occurs due to the presence of certain asperities on the surface of a body. Friction can be divided into two main categories: TABLE 1: CLASSIFICATION OF FRICTION
STATIC FRICTION:

Lubricants like oil, grease etc. fills up the asperities of a particular surface, making it smoother. The other ways of reducing friction involves polishing, proper selection of material, streamlining, using ball bearings etc.
Hence, the basic functions of a lubricant can be defined as follows.
FUNCTIONS OF LUBRICANTS
• To minimize corrosion: They tend to form a protective sheath on the surface of a material and hence prevent its contact with the atmospheric moisture and oxygen.
• To reduce the wear and tear of the machinery: They prevent the wear of the machinery by keeping the moving parts apart. Lubricants may also contain anti-wear or extreme pressure additives inorder to boost their performances against wear and fatigue.
• Lubricants have the tendency to reduce the wear and tear of machinery and hence result in increasing the efficiency of the machine.
• Prevents expansion of metal: Lubricants minimizes friction hence reducing the heat produced by the same. Thus they prevent the expansion of the metal due to this frictional
