Soccer star Lionel Messi was born on June 24, 1987 in Rosario, Argentina. Starting soccer at a young age, Messi would tag along with his older brother to demolish the field. At the age of eight, he was recruited to join the youth system of Newell's Old Boys, an Argentinian soccer club based in Rosario, Argentina, Recognizably smaller than most of the kids in his age group, Messi was eventually diagnosed by doctors as suffering from a hormone deficiency that stunted his growth. Growing up Messi’s parents lacked sufficient money to afford the treatment. The injections, for someone with GHD (growth hormone deficiency), are a life-changer, allowing them to not only develop greater height, but also helps deal with a variety of internal issues, such as pituitary function, …show more content…
Messi's parents, Jorge and Celia were determined to aid their son to reach greater heights . While the months traveled by, his parents came to realize that they could not afford the payment for the injections At the age of thirteen, Messi was offered the chance to train with a well known soccer club, FC Barcelona's youth academy. FC Barcelona's youth academy offered to pay for his medical bills as well. His parents picked up quickly on the offer and moved closer to the club. During the year of 2009, Messi was awarded his very first FIFA Ballon D’or, an annual association football award presented to the world's best men's player. Messi became the first player to score five goals in a Champions League match in early March. A few weeks later, he surpassed Cesar Rodriguez's club-record of two hundred and thirty two goals to become Barcelona's all-time leading scorer. By the end of 2010, Lionel Messi was awarded his second FIFA Ballon D’or. By the end of 2012, Messi had accumulated an astounding ninety one goals in club and international play, excelling the eighty five netted in a single calendar year by Gerd Muller in
